Sony revealed the PS5’s DualSense controller on the 7th of April, and reaction has been mixed. Many fans praise it for its risky, two toned design and the changes it has made to the DualShock 4, especially when compared to the Xbox Series X’s new controller, which is mostly the same as the Xbox One’s controller. In fact, in a direct response to Sony’s DualSense reveal, Microsoft actually shared a new gif of the Xbox Series X controller. The comment section of this tweet was extremely divisive, with fans of either console criticizing the controller of the other.

DualSense Design VS. DualShock 4 Design
The most notable changes made are to the actual design of the controller itself. One can see clearly that the shape of the controller is somewhat elongated and has more edges than the DualShock 4 controller did, and although it’s difficult to say without actually holding the controller, it seems a bit heftier than its predecessor as well. The striking two toned color scheme is also rather eye catching, and has many fans convinced that the PS5 will be white or two toned as well.
Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the DualSense controller has almost a complete lack of text. Although the DualShock 4 didn’t have a novel on it, the options button and share button were labeled as so. Here, what used to be those buttons are instead given icons to denote their use. The actual button placement is also different, as the DualSense seems more spread out due to its larger touchpad area. Finally, the X, Square, Triangle, and Circle buttons are curiously lacking their traditional colors, further showing Sony’s dedication to the new black and white color scheme.
DualSense Lightbar VS. DualShock 4 Light Bar
The DualShock 4’s inclusion of a light bar helped the controller to feel that much more new and high tech, and the DualSense has no plans of dropping that feature. Furthermore, the light bar on the PS4 was occasionally used to show information to the player, such as Destiny 2’s usage of it to display the player’s super meter. The PS5 DualSense takes this light bar and places it on either side of the touch pad, which means it should be more easily visible for players mid game. That said, PSVR uses the light bar to help track the controller, so it is unclear how the new placement will affect that.
Haptic Feedback
The DualSense will also feature enhanced vibration technology, known as haptic feedback. Though this feature was notably absent from the DualShock 4, it was included in Xbox One controllers. Sony’s late arrival to haptic feedback is one criticism which it faces commonly. Haptic feedback will allow the controller to vibrate at a huge array of intensities, as well as allow for specific parts of the controller to vibrate independently. This is meant to give a more immersive gameplay experience, and will be a nice upgrade from the DualShock 4.

Adaptive Triggers
Another feature which is completely new to the DualSense is adaptive triggers. This means that games will be able to communicate with the DualSense controller to provide a certain level of resistance when pulling either trigger on the controller. In short, using the R2 button to push a button may be easy as normal, but the controller will provide more pushback if the trigger is being used to draw a bow. Though this is a minor feature, it should help add to the immersion players feel when in game as well as provide developers with even more options to convey information to players indirectly.
Charging Capabilities and Built-in Mic
The PS4 DualShock 4’s usage of Micro USB for charging was fine at the time of its release in 2013, but feels incredibly outdated now. Thankfully, the PS5’s DualSense controller will rectify this problem, introducing USB-C charging ports for its controller. This lines up with what most phones are using these days, so that change is welcome. Additionally, the DualSense will feature a built in mic in addition to the built in speaker that was on the DualShock 4, though it is difficult to make any judgement before hearing how it performs.
Create Button VS. Share Button
The most mysterious change for this controller is the swapping of the old PS4 Share button for the new Create button. So far, Sony has been silent about what (if anything) the difference will be aside from the new name, but players can make some assumptions. Functionally, the Create button should be able to do everything that the Share button could do, including saving screenshots and videos, and sharing those online. More than likely, the button was renamed to Create to emphasize the mindset shift from sharing content to creating content.
This means that the PS5 DualSense may allow players far more control over the editing of the screenshots and videos they snag from their PlayStation, but what exactly this means is unknown. It could be that great features like SHAREfactory and other photo editing modes will be built into the Create button, and it would be nice to be able to view created content without having to suspend the game as well. Sony is holding back on detailing what new ways players will have to create content, but said that more information will be revealed as the launch date draws nearer.
The PS5 will launch this holiday season.
